Games to Help Develop Fine Motor Skills

Here are some fun ways to help your child strengthen their hand and wrist muscles and develop their fine motor skills.

Whether you make your own or buy a remade version from the store playing with playing with play doh is a great tool to help develop fine motor skills. Squeezing and stretching helps strengthen finger muscles. You can have fun with the play doh and try different projects, a fun one is play doh cupcakes. Have the kids decorate with small toys and poke with unlit candles.

Finger Paint
Painting with finger paint is another great way to strengthen finger muscles, for the older kids have them try to stay within the lines of a large picture.

Mini Pencils or Broken Crayons
With larger crayons and markers kids can hold with their whole hand, those mini pencils or even broken crayons encourage them to hold it correctly.

Sponges in a Bucket
Put a sponge and water in one bucket and have your child use the sponge to transfer the water to another bucket, get way to build hand strength.

Pasta Necklaces
Have them string uncooked pasta on a piece of yarn.

Pipe Cleaners in Colander
Find a colander with small holes, if you don't have one at home check the local dollar store, and have your child make creations with pipe cleaners. Have them stick one end of the pipe cleaner in and then bend to reach another hole to stick it in.

Hospital Bag Essentials

Not sure what to put in your hospital bag? Here are a few of our essentials for mom.

Even if you don't plan to nurse a nursing bra will be more comfortable than a traditional bra.

You can stick to the night gown provided by the hospital, but I felt a little more comfortable in my own clothes. I also found the hospital night gown was very difficult to nurse in.

3. Lip Balm and Toiletries
The hospital is very dry so lip balm is key, you may also want to pack some small toiletries from home.

Nice warm socks with a no skid bottom are perfect for those walks down the hall to the nursery.

5. Pads
Nursing pads to catch any leaks are a must even if you do not plan on nursing.

With my first son I didn't have this and really wish I had, this was the first thing I tossed in the bag with my second son.

I packed a pre-pregnancy outfit and had to have my husband run home to get me a new one. Remember that you will not be your pre-pregnancy weight when you go home, the second time around I packed a 6 month maternity outfit and it was perfect.

Yes, the hospital provides towels but they are usually thin and rough. A nice plush towel from home really hits the spot when you get out of the shower.

Don't forget to charge the battery before you leave.

Did we miss anything? What was your hospital bag must have?

The First Few Months: Playtime with Baby

Think baby is too small to really enjoy playing with toys? For the first few weeks of life baby will show little to no interest in toys, but that will quickly change after 4 weeks. Around 4-5 weeks baby will be more alert and aware of the world around her. This is where toys come in. In the first six months baby is starting to reach for and grasp objects and explores by putting objects in her mouth. So when picking out toys keep this in mind. Hoppi Box has experts curate the toys in the box so that they are developmentally appropriate.

Once you have figured out which toys baby likes hold them in front of her so she can focus her eyes on it, Frans Plooij recommends slowly rocking baby while holding the toy. Saying that a child perceives the world better when they are slowly moved around.

Have fun playing with baby at this stage of life because it all goes so quickly and by 6 months toys will take on a whole new meaning.

The Importance of Play

Those fun toys you see in the baby stores are for more than just keeping baby entertained while you wait in line at the grocery store or in a waiting room. They serve a vital development role, especially in the first 3 years of life.

Play is the way baby learns about his or her body and the world around them. Play is vital for skill development, social development and imagination. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) play is important for healthy brain development and child driven play allows parents to fully engage with their kids.

Keep in mind that not all play is created equal, at each stage of life baby’s developmental needs are different and are best stimulated by different types of toys and play. If you want to see what your baby’s needs are at each stage here is a good resource to bookmark.

Hoppi Box helps take some of the guessing work out of toy shopping for you, our panel of experts have curated boxes with developmentally appropriate toys baby will love. Sign up here

The Carousel of Life

It is astounding how much development and growth happens in the 2nd year of life! So many firsts...first steps, first sentences, first time putting on their own shoes, first time riding a tricycle. As much as we love those first moments, we sometimes just want to just stop time.
But today, we are celebrating the evolution of time. Here's peak at Addie's recent 2nd birthday party at a park with beautiful vintage carousel.
a on carousel copy

A celebration isn't complete without balloons! You can dress up these giant 3" balloons with colorful DIY balloon tassels.
The custom pink ombre cake was from Susie Cakes. And then we decorated it with an old carousel ornament that was painted gold and a mini DIY pennant flag. The delicious mini cupcakes were courtesy of Cako.
Custom carousel horse cookies by Noah's Sweets. They were so adorable, we almost didn't want to eat these little pieces of art!
PicTapGo-Image4party hat
We had a fun DIY sticker party hat station for the toddlers. It was a great engaging activity for them and then they got to wear the new hat they made. You can buy any paper party hat, glue craft paper to the hat and add DIY pom poms to top off the hat!

Each season brings change and opportunity for growth. Spring is upon us and with it we are thankfully experiencing spring showers, rainbows, beautiful clouds as well as new leaves on bare trees, blossoms, and more. You may have noticed your child's pants seem short and shoes a little tight. Our children are growing also and their skills are blossoming every day.

This is a good time to reassess expectations at home. Children are so capable…remember to offer more challenges as your child grows. Depending on your child's age, you might start having them dress themselves, put their own shoes on, set the table, feed a pet, make their own bed etc.

Get more tips on how to help your toddler master new skills.
